I stared down at the noodles in the boiling water before glancing at the clock. Mikey would be getting out of school in a few minutes. I gave the noodles one final swirl with my wooden spoon before grabbing my coat and heading down stairs.
As I slid into the Trans Am, my phone began ringing. I pulled it out of my back pocket and answered it. "Hello?" I wondered. I jammed the key into ignition.
   "Gerard?" Frank's voice wondered. "Hey."
"Hey, Frank. You still remember how to get to the penthouse?" I asked, pulling into the street.
"Yeah. You wrote it on my arm in sharpie, remember?" he wondered with an adorable giggle. "Yeah, I was just wondering if it was cool if I brought something for Mikey."
"Like what?" I asked, an amused smile playing my lips.
   "Well… It's a surprise." Frank laughed nervously.
"Please, Frank, you've never met Mikey. What if he doesn't like it?" I wondered.
"It's a video game. A friend gave it to me but I don't have the correct system. Does Mikey have an X-Box?" Frank wondered.
"That he does." I turned onto Mikey's school's street. "What is it?"
"First person shooter game. You get to kill zombies."
   "He'll love it."
   "Yay!"
I chuckled. "Okay. I'm picking up Mikey now. I'll see you in half an hour?"
"Sure thing," Frank replied. I snapped my phone shut. I threw my door open, setting my Chucks on the pavement. Mikey was sitting on the curb. He cradled his chin in his hand as talked to a girl about his age that had… Light purple hair?
I approached Mikey with a warm smile. "Hey, Mikes." Mikey's head shot up when he heard my voice. He jumped up and leapt toward me. He slammed into my chest, locking his arms around my waist.
"Gerard!" he cried. "I missed you!"
I looked down at him, shocked. I think my heart just literally melted… I ruffled his hair and wrapped my arms around him, giving him a gentle squeeze. "I missed you too, Mikey."
He pulled away and gestured to the girl that sat on the curb. "This is Brittany! She's my new friend!"
Brittany looked up. She straightened out her black skirt before she stretched out her legs, which were wrapped in spider-web tights. She set her combat boots on the asphalt and rose, her pig tails bobbing with her movements. She reached down and grabbed her grey coat before covering up her slim pale arms and her Iron Maiden shirt with the thick wool. "Pleasure to meet you," she said in a sweet, respectful voice.
"Pleasure's all mine, Brit," I said with a kind smile.
Brit blushed before tapping Mikey on the shoulder. He turned around, his eyebrows raised in question. She threw her arm around his neck, kissing his cheek. "Bye, Mikey!" she sang. Mikey blushed and waved awkwardly. As Brit danced off toward her mother's car—a scary looking woman with electric blue hair and piercings in any available space—I turned to Mikey.
   "You like her!" I cried.
Mikey's eyes widened. "You're crazy! I just met her!" He looked at his shoes before racing toward the car. "C'mon!" he cried. "I'm starving." I sighed, throwing my head back and strolling lazily after him. He stomped his foot. "GERARD!!!! C'mon!"
"The more you pout the slower I'll walk," I replied, slowing my pace.
   "Asshole," he muttered.
I stopped in shock. "Hey! No! You cannot say stuff like that."
   "You do all the time."
   "I'm twenty-two. You're seven. Deal with it."
   "C'mon. I'm hungry!"
"Fine!" I yelled, walking toward the car. I unlocked it and Mikey hopped in.
"Besides! Mrs. Toro said I had a cake waiting at home! Onward my trusty steed!" he called, pointing toward the penthouse.
"Mrs. Toro told you I got you a cake?" I asked, starting the car and pulling out of the parking lot.
Mikey nodded, his head bobbing like a bobble head. "Yeah!" He paused, looking up at me over the rim of his glasses. "You did get me a cake right?" he asked nervously.
   I shrugged my shoulders. "I might've. Why?"
"Because I want cake!" Mikey said, bouncing in his seat ecstatically.
"Okay!" I cried, turning onto the penthouse's street. "I got you a damn cake."
"Yay!" Mikey sang. He reached over and hugged my arm. "Thanks, Gee!"
I ruffled his hair with my hand. I pulled into the parking garage and parked the car near the elevators. I unwrapped Mikey's arms from around mine and rose from the car. "A friend of mine is joining us for dinner."
"You have friends?" Mikey asked in mock disbelief.
I narrowed my eyes to slits. "Oh ha, ha. Very funny, Mikey." He grinned up at me before reaching up to press the button to call the elevator. "Promise to be on your best behavior?" I asked. Mikey nodded, shifting from foot to foot impatiently. "Michael James," I said sternly. He glanced up at me nervously, biting his lip. "Pinky promise me that you'll be good when Frank comes over." Mikey held up his pinky and I clasped mine with his.
We got into the elevator only to get off of it a few seconds later when we got to the lobby. I inserted my key into a lock near our penthouse's elevator and pressed the call button. Mrs. Hensley looked at me with her normal disapproving glare. I smiled sarcastically and wrapped an arm around Mikey's shoulders.
My ringtone blared in my back pocket as we boarded the elevator. "Hey, Frank," I said after reading the caller ID and answering the phone.
"Hey, Gerard! I'm at your place. Just come in or what?" he wondered.
I blocked the elevator doors with my arm and looked at the entrance to the lobby. "Yeah. I see you. Just come in and get in the elevator with us."
"Okay." The other end died and seconds later, Frank walked into the lobby. He saw me and waved, rushing forward. "Hey, Gerard."
"Hey, Frank," I said with a warm smile. Frank ducked his head, a soft rose shade coloring his cheeks. He giggled and scratched the side of his head nervously.
He quickly turned to Mikey, pulling a plastic bag out of his hoodie pocket. "You must be Mikey!" he said, offering his free hand. Mikey gave Frank's tattooed hand a gentle shake before gesturing wordlessly to the bag in his hand. "Oh! This is for you." Frank handed the bag to Mikey.
Mikey pulled his new game from the bag. His eyes widened. "No way!" He threw his arms around Frank's waist. "Thanks, Frank!"
"How do you know my name?" Frank asked, giving him a small pat on the back.
Mikey shrugged, pulling away. "Gerard never shuts up about you."
Frank whirled to face me. He was trying to suppress a grin but failing miserably. "Really?"
Before I could open my mouth to protest, the elevator doors slid open. I smiled. Saved by the bell!
I clapped my hands and entered the penthouse. "Oh, man! Smells delicious! Let's eat!"
Short yes... But it's sort of a filler chapter XD Chapter 4 is plenty more interesting.
